"Lord Inquisitor Blackbane," Maltheus began. "I'm not quite sure what is going on inside his head, to be honest. The man..." he grinned at the word. "...if you can still call him that, believes the relic to be tainted. However, I don't know that he intended on making any enemies in this situation. I would not worry, too much, about Palov's threats. If he is even conscious when he arrives on the ship, I would be surprised. Have your ships, and I will have mine, keep an eye on Blackbane's and give the word if he moves into an attack position." he nodded at Markov, who originaly said the same thing. In present company, however, Maltheus did not want a good idea to go to waste, and thought he should reiterate, just in case.
He looked down at Rostock and the others.
"Can he be moved?" Reply author: Van Helser Replied on: 04/04/2004 01:09:34 Message: 'We will keep an eye on the Righteous Vengeance for you Brother Ejerholm,' said Vault into the vox caster, 'but I would say that the ship looks like it is readying itself to leave the system, not to attack.'
'Understood,' Ejerholm answered, 'you can start moving in the research team; we have Inquisitorial backing,' a slight hint of happiness in his voice.
'The landers will be launched within the hour,' Vault triumphantly answered, closing the channel and rubbing his hands together in expectation.

What do you man my young apprentice?" the dumbfounded look on Palov's face was soon changed to one of realization of who the old man in front of him dressed in the gleaming white and red armour: Lord Inquisitor Demetrius Blackbane. "That is right Arkturus this is what I would look like had I not been felled in combat. Pretty good for 753 Years I must say." Palov could merely shake his head in dumbfoundedness. "Make your report Interigator." Palov walked up to the great Inquisitor and touched his temple and shared with him the whole mission to Panea III. "I think we should set up a preliminary defensive line," Maltheus continued to the Lady as he watched his team walk away. "How many men do you have here? 'Excellent.' Ejerholm turned to the others, and announced the good news.
'I told you we wouldn't come under attack,' Markov said, clasping Ejerholm on the shoulder. 'It has all worked out fine.'
'Yes, we will be completely undisturbed while we inspect the full power of the Relic. These will be a couple of exciting months!'
Dorsin's face dropped, he walked towards Clyde and whispered into his ear. 'Mr Markov, I remind you that you are under contract to Dominic Nestrazzi I, you cannot waste time here. So far you have gathered no goods worthy of his study, the Techpriest may wish to stay here, but we cannot.'
'You're right,' said Markov dejectedly. 'Ejerholm, I take it that the Omnissiah's Forge will be staying on in this system during the investigations?' The Techpriest nodded. 'Then I have a problem. I need to continue my search for more pieces for my employer. Is there any way I can get out of this system soon?' He directed his question at the two Inquisitors in the chamber, hoping against hope that one of them would at the very least give him a lift.

"That could have been a nasty end" chuckled Leon, the both continued down the path, Ripley now a little more nervous, but felt at ease in the company of the guardsman, having faith in his abbilities.

I never knew my father...and my mom said that was for the best. Then when I turned thirteen, out of the blue Inquisitor Maltheus showed up. He said he had plans for me and he took me on his ship. He seems to have a strange protective side for me though. I asked him about it once, and he anly said I was special...Don't know what that means yet."
He looked up just in time to see Leon stopped in front of him, his arm up with a closed fist. He had signaled for Ripley to freeze, forgetting that he was not a guardsman. The acolyte nearly tripped over the guardsman.
"What is it?" Ripley asked in an excited whisper.

"No,...... this one is different." said Leon, standing and aproching the button. He signaled for Ripley to stay back, then he pressed the switch in. The wall infront of him started to grand and move, the floor was vibrating.
There was now a doorway infront of Leon, he stepped in, rifle ready. It was pitch black inside. Leon took out his lamp-pack and attached it to his Rifle. Sudenly there was a noise behind him, he swung round, rifle forward.
Leon let out a sigh, it was just Ripley, Leon let out a smile, but Ripleys face turned a white colour, he lunged at Leon, knocking him over.
"What the hell are you doing!" yelled Leon, Ripley rolled off of Leon, and they both faced the doorway. There stood a huge wolf type creature, wearing golden armour, and armed with an ancient polearm. It turned and glared at the pair. Leon pucked up Ripley and they both dived behind cover, just before the creature lunged again.

Mind you, I won't encrouch upon your studies as long as I recieve the same in kind. This is a large enough place..." she spanned her arm around, "it's almost as if there is more room upon entering."
Maltheus looked around again, slightly amazed by the technology, "I know what you mean. From the outside, the structure seems only able to occupy a few dozen men. But enough on the mechanics, that's for the Adepts to discover. We need to speak further on this, in confident quarters."
"I'm in full agreement." She flexed her elegant metal arm, clenching and unclenching her left fist. Her thoughts traced back to a few years before, "There is much to be learned..."
Maltheus was sure she was not talking about their current situation.
Silos lit a smoke and crouched through a small corridor, "Babysitting," he muttered. He smiled and put on serious eyes, "Alright boys, we've got a mission!" Drawing two of his men close, he spoke in a hushed tone, "This is a highly classified mission, you must never speak of it to anyone. We are to track down..." he paused for dramatic effect, "A small...", he turned and coughed, "...boy."
The two wide eyed troopers, trying to take in the severity of the mission, burst into laughter with their orders. Silos joined them. "Alright, buck up men, time to go huntin'." He relayed the orders to his other men as they crossed through paths unknown.
Juxt sat next to the med servitor as it laced up the injured Interrogator. After the injections given to Rostock, he barely felt the wounds. The giant muttered a prayer over the man, knowing him to be a worker of the God-Emperor.
Rostock, sober after the damage done and adrenaline spent, "How bad is it," not looking at his stomach. Juxt's eyes opened and stopped his prayer. "You will live, Brother Rawstock was it?" his deep voice low. Again Rostock asked through clenched teeth, "How. Bad."
"Your kidney has collapsed and must be replaced. The servitor has staunched all bleeding and removed the dead tissue. That's the worst of it, your stomach isn't as bad as it looked." Rostock dropped his raised head to the floor, Heh, that bastard thought he had me.
Anger returned to the Interrogator's eyes again, "Who are you, what are you?" he almost said 'freak', but it was obvious Maltheus and his cronies weren't about. "My name is Juxt. And I don't know."
Raalthon felt skepticism as Ejerholm spoke on the archeoxaic tech and toyed around with the 'machine'. He urged caution from the ecstatic/melodramatic Adept. "I know this is a wonderous find, Brother, but please, await our Brethren! We must secure this find first!" Then he turned and placed a metallic hand on Ejerholm's arm, "And where did your harsh words come from?"

"Something isn't right here," Leon breathed, realizing there was no way for one of the G'Mok to actually be in this room. Still, this Dog soldier was here and was attacking...just like before. He breathed deep and tried to calm himself.

'I will see to that shortly,' Ejerholm answered, 'be prepared for a rough descent.'
'Rough weather already noted, over and out.'
'Inquisitors?' Ejerholm shouted across the chamber, 'can you have some of your men meet the investigatory team at the tomb's entrance?' Stryde looked back at him. Well, at least he had asked this time, not just demanded.

Reply author: Stryde Replied on: 11/04/2004 04:44:39 Message: Silos walked through the tunnel system, rifle upheld and ready. Just a minute before, he thought he heard a boy giggling up ahead to the right. And so he and his two men followed to a dead end. Backtracking, they found the bend in the corridor had changed somewhat. Instead of veering back left as it physically should have, it turned a sharp right.
Confusion began to enter his crafty mind, so he picked up the pace. The path descended and turned left. Relieved by the curve, he wiped a bead of sweat from his brow. But there! There again, a fleeting sight infront of them! "Did you see that?" the guardsman to his right gasped. It looked like the boy had run away from them in the dim light.
"Hey, come back here!" Silos flicked his comlink, "We have confirmed the location of the boy and will bring him shortly."
They opened their stride to a jog, until their light sources extinguished at once. Grown men screaming echoed around them that wasn't theirs. One of the IG joined it, lighting the corridor with lasblasts. "Cease fire, damn you!" Silos tried to control himself, but he caught sight of two of Maltheus' men. He turned to try to calm his guards, and saw horror. One of his trusted men was pushing the eyes of the other into his sockets. A yell errupted from the ol' Major that hadn't since the days he faught demon hordes. Bursts of las fire mercilessly blinked unholy sight from his weapon. His eyes took it all in. And they were insane.
Inquisitor Stryde acknowledged the Adept, relaying the request to the comms team set up at the entrance. After hearing their response, Major Silos broke in. Or at least it could have been him. The comlink connection had massive static and his words bled together undefinably. "Silos! Respond! Silos, what is it?" She could only make out a couple words from his panicked replies: 'Holy' and 'Fraggin'.

"This can't be,... this cant be real!" yelled Leon, he heard noises outside, and there he say a group of guardsmen, turning on one and other. Ripley let out another scream, as the figure moved closer to the pair, Holst reacted imediatly, swinging his rifle and firing it from the hip. But the shot just seemed to pass straight through the man.
"What the hell?" said Leon, he fired again, but still it passed through. he unholstered his side arm, and handed it to Ripley, "Shoot it damn it!" yelled Leon to Ripley.
Ripley nervously aimed, his hands shaking. *BANG* the gun went off, and the figure took a step back, now bleeding from the arm. Leon now fired at the man, and once again the shot seemed to pass through. Suddenly it clicked.
"Ripley!" yelled Leon, "Its our fears, we,...we have to face them, only you can face it."
With these words Ripley fired a volley of shots into the man, and Leon turned to face the "Dog-soldier," but it was gone. Leon looked around, sudenly there was movement to his left, he turned and there stood a disfigured man, in a Lythan guard uniform, Officer markings on his jacket. The officer walked with a limp, blood trickling from a gash in his leg. Leon noticed a name tag on the jacket,.. it read "Col. G. Holst." Leons face went sheet white, the figure fell, Leon ran and caught him. "F,...f,...father?" said Leon.
The man now spoke, "Leon my boy,.... you have to let go of the past, I did what I thought was right, I did it for you." said Holsts father. Leon now had tears running down his cheeks, "Why father,.. why you leave me?" said Leon, "I needed you, mother didn;t smile after you left."
"I had my reasons son." said Holst's father, "I went so that others may live, and my men needed me in their last hour."
"WHAT ABOUT ME!!" screamed Leon, "I NEEDED YOU!"
Holst's father now smiled, "You have your mothers eyes." Leon now crying held his father tight, "You have to let me go my son, do not dwell on the past, live your life, the one I fought for." said Holst's father, "Make me proud son." with these words he died, Leon now closed his eyes, and held his father tightly, when he opened his eyes, his father was gone.
Leon stood, and then stood infront of him was the "Dog-Soldier." Leon picked up his rifle, and whiped the tears from his face, "IM NOT AFRAID ANYMORE!" Screamed Leon, firing round after round into the Dog, who took a step back after every shot, till eventually it droped dead on the floor. Leon droped to one knee, tired, shaken. He then remember Riplety, his stood, tured to Ripley, who was still pulling the trigger on the pistol, which was now empty, and the man lay dead on the floor. HE ran over to him, took the gun off of him, and picked him up and threw him over his shoulder,
"Its ok now buddy," said Leon, "Lets get you out of here." Leon walked towards the exit, Ripley over his shoulder.
The Emperors Faithful Servent ++Leon Holst++ Reply author: Stryde Replied on: 12/04/2004 12:02:53 Message: Rage and fear swept over the Major. Pestilent ooze and groping sores were his opponents vestments. A tall plague-ridden disaster shambled toward Silos, ready to spread the wealth. His rifle warm from fire had long been spent and was shakily replaced by his shot-selector stubber. It all returned to him. His first encounter with Chaos, years back in the Cadian Fifth.
"Sweet Emperor," he heard himself mumble after he watched this 'thing' mash Coporal Sancha's head in. His legs carried him backward as he sighted in the grotesquely large head. "Suck this!!!" he flipped the dial and squeezed, the recoil bringing sanity to his old gunslinger hands. Two small holes appeared on the plaguebearers cheek just before it burst as if the head were never there. He felt the ooze splat on his chestplate and looked down, not hearing the body fall to the floor.
His eyes were wide, watching the yellow-green flesh eat into his carapace like acid. His brain wanted him to panic, but he thought his way through anyway. This isn't happening. This isn't happening. There's no way!
Screams still echoed around him, but no one was there. It was the screams of his guard brothers, he could never forget such a sound. And yet, as horrifying as it were, the memory calmed him. He had walked away from that day, and would walk from this one. Looking down at his armor again, two concave marks marred the plate, but no disgusting gore remained. He walked back the way he came, finding his two partners, one headless, both quite dead and removed their tags.
"Inquisitor, this is team 1." The somber voice of the old Major sounded pinched over the comlink. "Corporal Sancha and Private Stocks are dead. Returning to your location." His pause desturbed her, then a stifled sob broke in, "ahh damnit. Burn this place Jenna, just Burn it!"
Stryde contemplated as Inquisitor Maltheus and Markov looked at her in interest. "Teams 2 through 5, regroup on my position. Communications Team, that goes for you as well. Now."
She exhaled heavily, "Complications gentlemen." Not broaching the subject further, she told them something equally disturbing. "My communications team reported Palov's escape to be a thorn in our sides indeed. He has collapsed the entrance he arrived in. I pray he has not discovered the way we came in," she eyed Markov as she said the last, knowing that was how he got in as well.
Savant Mosk returned to Stryde's side after recording and observing the AdMechs. "My Lady, I have something of interest to report." He waited to be acknowledged. "Speak, Brother." She masked her impatience with him.
"Adept Ejerholm and Adept Raalthon have a theory about this device. Or rather, this complex." He waved a hand around quickly to indicate the temple. "Raalthon believes there are more rooms here that may control different aspects to the structure. We have not encountered any yet, but our path was obviously meant for this place. It took little convincing from Raalthon and Ejerholm has revealed an interesting hypothesis in..." Jenna held a hand up to cut off the elderly man.
"Let's wait to see what our scouts can reveal. Perhaps they have found something, or perhaps this place is just a big labyrinth," Inquisitor Maltheus intuited something different, something dangerous. And so did Inquisitor Stryde.

He was in really deep trouble now; lost and blind down in these tunnels. He stumbled onwards, his hand running along the wall, hoping to guide himself back to the central chamber. He noticed an orange light in the distance, which looked like a flickering flame. It was coming towards him. Dominic let out a large sigh of relief. He had been found at last.
'Mr Markov, is that you?' he shouted towards the bearer of the lighted torch, 'Mr Dorsin?' The figure wasn't answering. Maybe it couldn't hear him. The feeling of relief slowly started turning to dread as numerous horrible scenarios began running through Dominic's head. What if it wasn't someone looking for him? What if it was one of the soldiers who had tied him up earlier? Dominic stumbled backwards, away from the rapidly closing figure, tripping over his own feet, and falling to the ground.
He gasped as he saw the figure properly for the first time, illuminated by the burning torch it carried. Tall, dressed in deep red robes, and with a leering metal mask. One of the monsters he had been scared into silence with as a child. Tales of aliens were bad enough, but this character was the worst. A madman, obsessed with burning heretics, burning naughty children, for no reason at all. All he did was burn and kill, burn and kill. Dominic scrabbled backwards as the madman leant over him.
'You will burn, evil sinner!' he shouted at him, 'you will burn!'
Dominic leapt to his feet and ran back through the corridors screaming.

"We need to get a head count," Maltheus said finaly. He was not ready for this to get out of hand. "Get all your men back here. If the entrance was blocked we'll have to find another way out, but we aren't going anywhere until everyone is accounted for."
He stood and tapped an icon on his com link.
"Leon, Ripley," He said into the link. "Get back to the main tomb." Turning to Stryde..."How many more men do you have out there?"
**************************************
Ripley shuddered slightly. He stared at the floor. He had faced his fear, and was still there to talk about it...that was, if he could still talk.
"Rip," Leon said. His tone was comforting, but stern all at the same time. He knew he had to bring Ripley back, but not at the expense of scaring him even more. The boy was exactly that, still a boy. "C'mon buddy. It's OK now. We can go find Maltheus, now."
Ripley looked up at Holst. The guardsman held out his hand to help the boy up. Ripley blinked a couple of times, then realized that it was just him and Leon. He began to grin, as tears streamed down his face.
"I did alright, didn't I?" he asked, Leon pulling him up shakily.
"You did fine," Leon told him, patting him on the shoulder. "You did just fine."
Just then their vox links crackled to life. Maltheus' voice came over the line. His tone was one of urgency.
"...Get back to the main tomb now."
"Looks like it's time to go," Leon said, his arm still over Ripley's shoulder. The two of them began to make their way back to the main tomb. The old guardsman stalked back through the dark room defiantly.
"AHHH!!" Dominic held his left arm up to stave off the psychopath. A mechanical whine erupted as the chainsword in hand spun metal-toothed death. His cackling could barely be heard over the cacophony. Then movement caused the boy to shut his eyes, a warm liquid splatted on his face.
Openning one eye, he saw a crazed soldier holding a large gun up, smoke slithering from the barrel. "O.K. boy. Time to get you back to your folks."
Silos watched the body of another plaguebearer drop with an audible *plump*. Stepped over the atrosity and offered a hand to the frightened child.

Leon simply nodded his head in Ripley's direction. Maltheus looked and saw the Acolyte. He patted Leon's shoulder reassuingly. "Help them get a head count," he told Leon as he walked toward Ripley.
The young acolyte sat, rocking slowly back and forth, staring at the floor. Maltheus reached out slowly and placed his hand gently on the boy's shoulder. Ripley jumped a bit and looked up into Maltheus' eyes. There was pure fear there for a moment, but he recognised Maltheus almost instantly. He broke into sobs and threw himself at the Inquisitor. Maltheus wrapped his arms around the boy and held him close for a moment.
"Shhh," he said softly. "It will be OK. What happened?"
Ripley looked up at Maltheus and tried to speak. All that came out were choked back sobs.
"Don't worry," Maltheus said. "I'll as Corporal Holst. He took Ripley's shoulders in his hands and looked the boy square in the eye. "I need you to keep going. Can you do that? I am here and will keep you safe. Can you stay strong for me?"
Ripley nodded slowly and looked at the floor. Maltheus ruffled the boys hair and walked slowly back to the rest of the group. He noted the odd looks he was getting, From Inquisitor Stryde particularly.

"My Lady," Savant Mosk spoke, "perhaps this place is responding to the earlier conflict in this chamber?"
"Noted. We need to find out how to secure this place." She looked to her men, a good number shaken.
Silos entered the device cavern holding Dominic's hand, his pistol held up in a resting poise. A crazed look held his eye as he stalked over to Inquisitor Stryde and Markov. Looking down at the boy, he pulled his hand towards the Archeoxenan's direction.
Styrde noticed battle marks on her Major's gear, his rifle missing, blood caked on him, his helmet missing. When he finally locked his gaze with hers, he flicked the dial on his pistol and holstered it. "Nightmares," was all he could manage through his trembling lips.
Raalthon called over from his studies. "Inquisitors, we have made contact with the Adeptus Mechanicus detachement, they will arrive very shortly."
"Major, get your act together." She looked hard into his face, bringing a sense of discipline back into the officer's eyes. "Take as many men as you can. You will accompany me to escort them, pick only men that have encountered something and have kept their sanity. Raalthon, you too, let's go."

Silos had been staring at the boy and the Archeoxenan. It reminded him of the family he had lost so long ago. "All ready," He called out half-heartedly. He checked his ammo in his pistol out of habit and smoothly drew the slide back. It resounded with a *clack* and cleared his thoughts of the daemons that surely waited.

"Jenna," Silos wasn't worried with protocol as the men around him were hers, "lemme tell you something." He paused to steel himself as the group moved forward, "What I saw in here, it comes from your head."
She arched a blond eyebrow as he continued. "Don't get me wrong though, it's real. Or at least, it's physical. If it were 'real' real, I'd be dead from the plague..." He was at a loss for words, and yet the young Inquisitor understood. She nodded in consent. The older man shuddered and steadied himself, "Just don't let it get to ya, it can still be killed or at least stopped." He mock-aimed at the darkness ahead with his stubber.

"She has gone to greet the Mechanicus research team," Maltheus said looking back in the direction her team had left. He turned back when he heard Rostock take in a deep breath, and groan a bit at the pain.
"His shot hit deep," Rostock grinned a painful grimmace.
Maltheus nodded and patted the Interrogator on the arm.
"Go sit and take it easy until the Lady returns with the Mechanicus team," he instructed. Rostock turned to leave. "And Rostock," he added. "Thank you. You have done well."
Rostock stared at the Inquisitor for a moment, then turned and walked over to take a seat against a wall. Raalthon scanned the closed entrance for the tell-tale signs. "Might I suggest the team don their thermosuits?" He tapped the runes and turned a peculiar stone. The doorway became insubstantial, allowing the Tech Priest to walk through unfettered.
The troopers looked to Silos as Stryde and Juxt neatly followed through the 'wall'. Shrugging, the Major issued his men forward into the now dimming sunlight. The comforts of the somewhat warm temple were instantly forgotten.

The gun servitors marched slowly onwards through the snow drifts towards the south entrance of the tomb. They crested a rise and came into full view of the group waiting to escort them. Their targetting engrams came alive as their laser sights played across the guardsmen at the bottom.
Silos immediately noticed the red dot projected onto his chest plate, and pulled his stubber from its holster. 'Those crazy Techpriests are going to blow us away!'
'Quiet Major,' Stryde instructed, 'those servitors are just doing what's in their programming, they won't fire.'
Sure enough the dot disappeared from Silos's chest, he humphed with mild annoyance.
A Techpriest joined the gun-servitors at the top of the hill. 'Ah wonderful, you must be our escorts! I am Techpriest Xauhan, leader of this little investigatory team,' he continued as he descended the hill towards them, 'pleased to meet you.' He extended a remarkably fleshy hand towards Stryde, who shook it.
'Inquisitor Jenna Stryde,' she replied, 'how many of you are there?'
'Another four Techpriests, three surveying servitors, the two gun servitors you can see, and associated servo skulls,' Xauhan replied, almost tunefully. 'Please tell, what is the Relic like?'
As the sun set in the sky, the investigatory team entered the complex.

Speaking on the intricacies found thus far, he passed as much information as he could. It seems the Tech Priest had let the prior conflicts slip his mind...
Breaking into their 'captivating' conversation, Stryde hid her annoyance, "I must warn you and yours, Brother Xau-han," pronouncing the name slowly, "the top priority of myself and my collegue is to clear this temple first and foremost. I appreciate the support given," gesturing the clomping gun servitors.
"Yes, yes of course! I assume there has been little trouble and assure you of the expedient and swift nature we will undertake this. I predict no more than an hour spent in that area," he grinned his confidence and nearly continued.
"Actually, that is what needs bringing up. Almost a dozen scout guardsmen have lost their lives here, with little in the form of cause. There are still four of my men unaccounted for, I simply must stress caution." The Tech Priest paused in contemplation as they continued back to the grand chamber.
Maltheus observed Ejerholm's ramblings in secret. It was a rare occasion that he worked with or around the Mechanicus, and everytime it grated at him. One minute, they're genius, the next, flipping insane.
He shook his head slowly in mirth at his thoughts, not noticing the intruder.
Markov was the first to noticed the blood drenched guard enter. The fine black carapace armor showed no marring, aside from the color change. A wicked grin shown on the guardsman's face, not at all touching his wide white eyes. The bedraggled guardsman looked right and left, seemingly registering all in the chamber. It was then Maltheus 'felt' the guardsman's gaze, and turned.
The crazed man lifted two lasrifles, one obviously pilfered from a fellow guardsman. In that look, the powerful Inquisitor knew what had happened to Stryde's communications team.

"I'm ok, quick we better get into cover" replyed Ripley, Holst put his arm around him and began to walk him to a spot of cover behind an arch, Leon sat him down.

He stepped towards the man, laspistol pointed at him. But he made no moves. Markov checked his pulse, but he was dead. He turned back to the main chamber. Ejerholm seemed upset.
'What is going on here?' he fumed, 'what has got into all these men?'
'I think this has something to do with the phenomena Lady Stryde's man described,' answered Maltheus, looking up from helping Ripley.
'Someone must find out what exactly is causing this,' said Ejerholm, 'and as soon as possible!'
And I wonder who that's going to be, not you anyway, thought Maltheus.

"Keep a lookout on that entrance, Archeoxenan," Maltheus commanded. Something would have to be done about this place. His original thinking on saving this place for study waned briskly.
The first signs that something was amiss began with Inquisitor Stryde herself. She hadn't sensed anyone else ahead of her or any psychic presence, but the sight infront of her could not be ignored. Down the pathway, her father approached slowly with outstretched hands.

"How is he?" he snapped as he approached Mosk and the med Servitor working on Leon. He glanced over to Ripley who grimmaced a bit as he bandaged his own leg, but otherwise seemed fine.
"He will survive," Mosk answered. "But he cannot be moved. His injuries are rather severe."
Maltheus cursed and turned away. He walked over to Ripley and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder.
"You OK?" he asked. Ripley nodded. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Ripley answered through clenched teeth. "But I'm about ready to get out of here."
Maltheus let out a sigh of relief. He still had his sense of humor...he would be fine.
"Rostock," Maltheus called to the Interrogator. "Stay with Ripley. Watch him."
The Interrogator walked over slowly and stared into Maltheus eyes. Maltheus knew that he felt this was below him, to babysit an Acolyte. Maltheus did not care. He wanted no more harm to come to the boy.
"Yes, sir," Rostock answered slowly. He turned and stood, towering over Ripley as he sat and continued to wrap his wound in clean white cloths.
The Inquisitor straightened up and pulled out the note that Jenna had given him before she left. He punched up the codes written on the paper.
"Lady Stryde," He called into the comlink. "How far out are you? We seem to have a situation."

Glancing back down the corridor, he caught light from their torches reflecting off inhuman eyes, pairs and pairs of them, all burning with malevolence, that was utterly alien. Just like the eyes that he and the rest of the investigatory team had seen when they had been investigating the space hulk, End of Time. Genestealers. Horrible xenos creatures, horrible and deadly. How were they here now? It made no sense, it was impossible! Viscious snarls became audible.
The gun-servitors stomped forward, their targetting lasers flitting over the genestealers. They both opened fire with their heavy stubbers, raking the creatures with high calibre rounds. The genestealers fell apart, almost seeming to crumble like ash. But behind them, more and more became visible in the half-light. Hundreds of cases of ammunition spilled out onto the floor from the servitor's guns, firing on full auto ceaslessly. The first servitor's hopper emptied, quickly followed by the second. They both kept turning their gun arms; there were targets still present, though no shots would leave those guns again. The genestealers barrelled forward, dismembering the servitors as they passed them, right at the group of techpriests.

"Why have you let me down, you stupid idiot," she screamed. Juxt felt the words stab him through the heart. She stepped toward him, her metal hand poised to strike him across the face. He tried to look into her eyes, but they were empty, and black. Something was not right.
"YOU FAILED ME!" the image of Jenna Stryde screamed at the giant. "WHY?! HOW?!"
His head spun. What was happening? How could she be so upset, so angry…what had he done?

"So," he began, knowing full well the Machine man would be less than helpful. "What have we discovered so far? Is there anything of use here?"

Ejerholm tutted and twittered inside the ancient Dorvastian's mausoleum, running checks and cross referencing his memory banks with the Relic. He would need intricate laser readers, and scanning drones to measure the exact dimensions of the Relic, and to find out what frequencies it was projecting on, if any. It was a wonderous find. Absolutely marvellous. Hopefully the investigatory team would hurry up, so that he could find out exactly what made the Relic tick.
Dominic sat on a rock beside Dorsin. The child was near to tears. He had been retelling his story to the savant, telling him about the Redemptionist who had tried to kill him.
'My mother used to tell me about him when I was bad,' he whimpered, 'she said that the Redemptionist would burn me because of my sins, burn me alive. He was the monster that I was always most frightened off. I hated hearing about him. And he was there in the tunnels! How was he there? How? "Yes," Holst answered.
"And what did you see, Ripley?" Maltheus asked his Acolyte.
"I saw...It was...death, incarnate," Ripley answered, still shaken from the images in his mind.
Maltheus began to walk quickly around the chamber. His head spun as he began to put the pieces together slowly.
"Fear, fear, fear," he said finaly...pointing to each of the others in turn. He spoke out loud to himself..."It knows what we fear...it uses that as a weapon."
He chuckled, not in humor...but at the sheer genius of the device. To face one's deepest fear, that would be greater than any weapon devised by man. His face went straight. Stryde and her team were out there. He paced frantically for a moment. What horrors could they be facing in those frozen tunnels?
"Ejerholm!" he snapped. "I need you to stop buzzing around that thing and get over here." His tone demanded attention, and a reaction.
"But I must prepare for the research team," The tech adept began.
"If you don't get over here there may not be a research team," Maltheus growled.
The tech priest turned, emotionless and paused in his scans of the Relic.
"Interesting," he said and walked over to Maltheus.
"I need you to scan the entire structure," Maltheus began. "We will be looking for an emmiter of some sort. And a reciever, a Psy tracker or something like that. I need it NOW!"
Ejerholm still seemed impassive.
"A receiver, and trnasmitter," He began, calculating the options of what Maltheus could be talking about compared to know Dorvastian technology. "Hmmm..."
"Just focus," Maltheus said, now inches from the Tech adept's face. "And find the devices...Lives are at stake."
The Priest turned and moved toward some equipment stored nearby.
"Stryde!" Maltheus called over the Comlink. "DAMNIT!"

Eyes narrowing, Stryde watched the unbelievable events around her, knowing it all a farse. Her ward, directly infront of her, slumped to his knees and looked at the floor in pain and sorrow. Weapons fire blinked shadows all about the corridor, painting fear and surprise on the party.
Major Silos looked around at the trembling Mechanicus team as they opened fire on the horde moving in on them. He could barely hear over the clacking stubberfire. One of the Techpriests fell to the ground, eviscerated by a sweep of a genestealer's claws. Three combat-skulls danced around one of the aliens, chainblades slicing through the metallic flesh, before the creature smashed them from the air.
Juxt turned to see his Lady standing beside him, not angry at all, willing him to fight, to fight for her. He heaved his frost blade through the air in a heavy arc, which bisected the nearest genestealer. He thrust out with his blade again, skewering another.

His attention was immediatly drawn away from the imiter, the main chamber was being flooeded with a veriaty of monsters, fears and strange figures. Leon could see nothing. Even through the scope. Not even the sound of his own breathing reached his ears. A feeling began to creep upon him...panic. But being sensory deprived left no room for brash action. He let out a slow silent breath in the pitch black darkness.
Silent and Dark.
Ripley froze in place. What had just happened? He had barely seen Leon move before the panic started in the room, then the muzzle flash. If Ripley didn't know any better, he would have sworn Leon was aiming right at Maltheus...or where he could have been. There was no chance...was there?
Silent and Dark.
Ejerholm began scanning franticaly. All signals were lost. He could not lock on to anything. There was a high energy reading, but it seemed to be comming from all around. This was fascinating. What type of trap had the Dorvastians thought of now?
Silent and Dark.
Dominic turned. All around him was blackness. Dorsin, who had been at arm's length seemed to dissappear before his eyes. He tried to call out, and even felt himself form the words. No sound reached his ears. He stood, and tried to move, but the blackness would not let up. He screamed and was answered with silence.
Silent and Dark.
The corridor went black and Jenna spun, ready for anything. Where had they gone? Juxt was just at her fingertips. Now all was black. She attempted to reach Maltheus on the comlink. He voice was lost in the darkness surrounding her. She reached out, looking for the flickering lights that were her men's consciousness, but found nothing.
Silent and Dark.
Juxt swung at a charging genestealer, and found himself slicing through blackness. He turned to find his lady and she was gone. Confusion set in. He tried to say her name, but mused at the fact that his voice was gone. He stood and waited for someone to find him.
Silent and Dark.
Markov shot out, but his gun niether flashed, nor was there a sound. He saw nothing. He heard nothing. Had one of those bugs gotten him? Was this death? He wondered, and waited to meet the Emperor.
Silent and Dark.
Silos looked around. The room was black, and the chaos had stopped. He was dead, and he knew it. He began to laugh. Slowly at first, then from deep inside when he found he could not even hear himself.
Silent and Dark.
Rostock watched as everyone around seemed to go blind. He heard Dominic scream, but no one seemed to respond. Leon Holst walked right in front of him, and seemed as though he could see right through the Interrogator. He looked around. The blast...Corporal Holst had done something. The machine Maltheus was investigating...Something was wrong with it, but it was not destroyed.
Silent and Dark.
Rostock began to climb the lift. He groaned in pain. He had to figure out what was happening, or they would never get off this planet. He had to do something while the others were trapped.
Silent and Dark.

She reached out infront of her with her hands outstretched, eyes closed. Juxt was right there, he was right there!
Silos laughed genuinely and madly. This was no death he'd ever heard of, it was like his own personal light switch turned off! Instead of staying in one place going crazy, he began to run. And run. Until something hard and quite unmovable slammed him in the face and dropped him to his rump.
Juxt looked right and left aggressively, his senses on total edge in the blackness. He called out to his master and heard not a response. His grip choked up and tightened around the handle of his impressive weapon. Nervousness found him, and he prayed.

He slowly crept past Ejerholm and saw Inquisitor Maltheus standing, on guard, in his own blind nothingness. He appraoched slowly, glancing at the machine. Small beams of light and energy could be seen in the smoke that filled the air from Leon's shot. One beam each reached out and touched Maltheus and Ejerholm on the forehead. As he got closer to the machine a beam shot out and swept over him, then dissappeared.
He had seen such devices before, though never of such quality or strange manufacture. It was some sort of scanner, and judging by the energy beams, was reading psychic energy...or thoughts to say the least.
"Inquisitor Maltheus," he called. The Inquisitor remained still, and unmoving. He noticed that Maltheus eyes scanned the area in front of him. He was thinking. Trying to figure this out.

Ripley stood slowly and chanced a step forward. He assumed he moved, as it seemed he could not even feel the floor beneath him. At least he did not feel confined to a resticted space...it felt as though he could move. He placed his hands in front of him and slowly began serching the darkness. For what, he was unsure. Then he felt something and his heart skipped a beat.
Corporal Holst leaned heavily on his rifle. His wound made breating difficult, and moving at anything faster than a walk was out of the question for now. He tried to focus, but found it difficult in the dead silence, and relentless blackness that surrounded him. Out of habit he reached for the dog tags that he used to wear around his neck. Then he remebered...he had given them to Ripley.
Then, almost as if thinking the boy's name invoked his presence, he felt a hand on his shoulder. Turning, and slightly startled, he saw Ripley standing next to him.
"LEON!" Ripley cried out. He could hear his own voice.
"RIPLEY!" Leon said almost simultaneously. He looked on in confusion as he saw the Acolyte's mouth moving, but no sound came out. He tried to turn and Ripley stepped back.
Then they were alone again...in the silent dark.
Leon reached out immediately...and grasped Ripley's outstreached arm. They each blinked into the other's existence. Leon tried to talk, to ask Ripley what was going on...but still no sound.
Ripley held up a hand, careful not to let go of Leon this time. He closed his eyes and concentrated. Leon, can you hear me?
Leon almost fell over when he heard Ripley's voice in his head. The acolyte opened his eyes to see Leon's wide eyed stare, and his head nodding franticaly.
Don't let go. Hold on to me. That seems to be the only way we can see each other.
Leon nodded and they both set out 'searching' for someone else, or something else. Reply author: Van Helser Replied on: 22/04/2004 21:27:22 Message: Dominic wailed silently in the darkness. What had happened to the light? Why couldn't he even hear himself? Where was everyone else?
Markov swore. Bizarrely he didn't even hear it himself. Had he been deafened? He couldn't remember an explosion or anything like that. Could you just go deaf all of a sudden? He pulled his flashlight from his pocket and switched it on. Everything remained pitch black, the light didn't even catch his fingers as he ran them infront of the torch. Was it broken? He shook it repeatedly. No more light came out of it.
Dorsin began panicing. He had never known darkness as omniscient as this. Was this a punishment from the Emperor for being in this xenos structure, studying its weapons? It was, it was! He slumped to his knees and began praying for forgiveness. He was shocked at the lack of his own voice. Had that been stolen from him too as a punishment? He could not hear anything either. Had the Emperor rendered him blind, mute and deaf as punishment for his sins?

He closed his eyes and tried to focus. Quickly he opened them as he thought he heard something. Something he should not hear, ever again.
Rostock watched Maltheus for a moment. Many things raced through his mind. He could leave them all here and go back to Maltheus' ship, telling the crew that everyone else had been killed. That would damn his soul forever, and he knew it. He cursed that the thought even crossed his mind. No...for all his faults, Maltheus had been good to everyone in his team.
He stepped forward and placed a hand on Maltheus' shoulder. The Inquisitor jumped slightly as suddenly Rostock popped into existence next to him.
"Rostock, can you hear me?" Maltheus asked...know what he was saying, but not hearing his own words.
Rostock grinned a bit, now finding the humor in the situation.
"Yes Inquisitor," he answered nodding his head. Malhteus heard nothing.
"The Machine," Maltheus said. "Can you see it? Can you destroy it?"
Rostock looked over his shoulder at the device that had scanned him. Maltheus looked into the black void that Rostock seemed to be able to penetrate.

Juxt looked down at Jenna and smiled brightly, "My Lady!" Sheathing his mighty blade, he reached out with his arm for her. And recoiled. He had never been this bold with her before and knew not if it was proper or justified.

He reached out with his mechadendrites, hoping to scratch off a wall, or off of Maltheus who was with him scant minutes ago. There was nothing. It was as if he was isolated in space, from everyone and everything. The technology of the Dorvastians was exceeding his expectations; perhaps this was the effects of another defence mechanism, some kind of teleportation device had been triggered and had transported them deep into space. Hopefully the effects would be temporary and he would return to the tomb complex - he would love to study this particular piece of xenos technology!

He pulled his power axe from his back and thumbed the little red button on the hilt. The blade hummed as the pale green energy began to dance around its razor sharp edges. He spun it lithely in his hands creating quickly fading circles of green in the air. Stepping quickly toward the machine, he lifted the weapon over his head with both hands and roared as he brought it down quickly on the device.
Maltheus nearly stumbled as the dim light of the corridor rushed back to his vision. The sounds of Dominic's wailing filled his ears, along with the various others that were calling out for some sort of help.
Leon and Ripley just looked at each other and grinned, as the chamber re-appeared around them. The looked back at Marche. The other Acolyte, whom had remained mostly silent throughout the entire strange ordeal let out a shout of joy and releif.
Jenna found Juxt and the others, standing alone. The aliens were gone, the false Lady Stryde was gone, all their fears...gone. The unfortunate few who fell to the materialized horrors lay in pools of blood. Most of them had gone to meet the Emperor, but a couple lay maoning in pain.
Maltheus looked at Rostock.
"Let's get everone together and get out of here as soon as possible," he said to the Interrogator. "Let's hurry men, who knows when the next assault will occur." Her edge all the way on, she continued to 'feel' for psychic residue, and found none.
"Brother Maltheus, has Adept Ejerholm found a way to shut these damn defenses down?!"
Major Silos picked himself off the ground next to the wall, apparently the runes etched into the bulkhead 'stopped' his run. He rubbed his nose fiercely and returned to Inquisitor Stryde. "Damn this place, Inquisitor, damn it all."
Raalthon clanked over to the gun servitors. Both sat docile, weapons pointing low in obvious 'hibernation'. Between him and the other Adepts, they worked to power the mechanations back up, apparently their programming couldn't compute the lack of, well, anything.

Maltheus watched as Rostock took a couple more swings at the nightmare machine.
"I think it has been taken care of," he responded as sparks flew and bluish green flames flicked from inside the machine. "We need to rendezvous back in the main chamber ASAP."
He turned as Rostock walked past and headed back to the lift to go down to meet the others. Ejerholm spun away, off balance, and Rostock raised his axe to deliver the coup-de-grace. Maltheus caught his arm as the axe began its descent.
'What are you doing?' Rostock shouted at him, 'he attacked me!'
'Don't kill him, we need to learn what the Relic is,' Maltheus replied. 'Emperor knows that I dislike this Techpriest greatly, but he is the only one of us that has any real idea what is going on here.' Maltheus looked down at the fallen Techpriest, who was visibly shaking with rage.
Ejerholm was seething. 'He has completely annihilated a masterful piece of Dorvastian engineering! I was not even given the chance even to investigate it before that moron destroyed it.'
'Ejerholm, control yourself!' ordered Maltheus, stepping between the Adeptus Mechanicus man and Rostock, who was worked up himself. 'You may well be angry at the destruction of this machine, but if Rostock had not done it, who knows how long we would have been caught in that terrible limbo. Come with us back to the main chamber and explain what the Relic is and how it works. We will be gone soon and no-one will interrupt your work again.'
Ejerholm snorted and stood, and headed for the lift.

The tech priest looked at the Inquisitor blankly and then turned to the lift. Rostock walked up next to Maltheus and stared at the Ad Mech as he boarded the lift.
"I don't like that man," Rostock said in a low tone.

They spoke little of the encounter.
Offhandedly, Jenna struck up a conversation with the now not-so-cheery Adept leader. "Aparently these runes have different functions. The archeoxenan in your employ pointed out that this one," she touched lightly on the dim red rune, beautiful tracings glowed the path they would inevitably take, "will guide us to the main chamber." Hearing the approval from the Adepts and some bizarre beeping and clicks from the entourage.
"Yes, after an initial scanning, it seems that at least one type of rune activates defense mechanisms. Other effects probably include climate and atmospheric control. Initial evaluations, in collaborating with Ejerholm, also reveal the possibility that each and every symbol is cohesive with the devestating weapons xenotech that lies shortly before us." 'Hopefully they will be gone within the hour and we can get down to investigating the Relic's secrets fully.' Xauhan seemed a lot calmer. 'A defence mechanism you say, wondrous? The ripples became more violent, turning to wave-like expullsions, before turning a dim blue then raging red. Light poured out of a crack shaped mark in the middle of space where the ripples had come from. Real space tore open, belching out a small ship of the seemingly gigantic hole. Suddenly, the pair of broken ends slammed together again, resewing together the fabric of space neatly as if nothing had happened. The bulky, brutalistically black and dull grey ship glided smoothly across space defying its misleading appearance. It was like pieces of junk had been collected and welded together untidily, yet behind that was an incredible precision and pattern. It was not pretty. It was almost like the frame of a ship, but it worked more effectively than any other. It was a mechanicus vessel, and no two were alike. Custom made from scratch by the Magos, it was the epitome of technology. The mechanicus are more than a little jelous of others with more power than themselves, and therefore make sure what they have is secret and no other can have it. Within the bulk lay a complex array of anti sonar/radar equipment and hefty shielding. Nobody would see it coming unless they pointed a high intensity anti cloaking device directly at it. It would be incredibly useful to the rest of the galaxy, possibly crushing the other foes of the imperium with a wave of cloaked armadas, but that is the way of the mechanicus. *** The cold world of Pangea Tertiary orbitted far from the local star, glittering like a frosted marble in Oelereich's augmetic eyes. There was no visible skin on his body; or at least anything that resembled skin. Both his eyes were bionical, and his legs were probably bionical, but hidden behind a sweeping cloak. his mouth was sewn shut, a vox panel visible on his throat. His left arm was cauterized into a bionical stump from the elbow down. There was a slot in the stump where in times of battle, a large chain saw was placed. Ex skitarii veteran Misen Gon walked onto the bridge, his arm dark metal fibres and his eye also bionical. There were other bionics upon his body, but they were hidden away in his body. His lungs were augmetic, and so was his heart. What skin that was on his body was gently tanned. He was naturally extremely tall, rivalling heights with a space marine and was a menacingly muscular figure. But not incredibly smart. But that was not his purpose. "We have arrived in the system, master. We are nearing the planet." His voice was rich and deep, the bass resonating around the ship. Oelereich nodded in recognition. "Prepare yourself, Misen. Get your weapons and fetch my chainsaw." His voice was not monotone, but devoid of any emotion, the sound coming from the vox panel on his throat. Misen nodded, and gave a quick salute. *** The ship touched down on the cold world of Pangea III, a complex of tunnels and catacombs visible on the surface of the planet. Misen Gon and Magos Oelereich stepped out into the cold air, a brisk breeze ruffling his cloak around his bionic legs. A bolt pistol was holstered to his side beneath the cloak, and his chain saw was already in its place on his left arm. Gon's pair of MK IV bolters were strapped to his thighs untidly, they're large bulk unsightly, but strangely comfortable. Misen was capable of carrying a bolter in each hand, even with his right, non bionical one. Oelereich's mechanical brain processed the signal. An aerial slid out of his right wrist, and he raised it into the air. He diverted the energy flow of his voice to the long range vox caster built into him and tuned his ears into the channel. "Inquisitor Maltheus, do you read me? This is Magos Oelereich. I have landed on the planet Pangea III and await your instruction for a suitable location for meeting."
