Commissar Yank kicked a Codon in the head as he jumped down into the enemies trench. He turned and shot another in the head. Ox jumped down next to the commissar and aimed the heavy weapon he was carrying down the opposite end. Ox was the strongest man in the regiment and carried a modified weapon. A pair of rocket launchers was what he was armed with today.
Condon's were now coming round the edge of the trench. Ox shot the first of the two rockets down blowing apart six more Condons's. He shot the second rocket into the trench wall at the end. The wall collapsed blocking the way for the time being. He dropped the custom made heavy weapon, drawing long knife. He ran to his commissar side to help out.
'Hotshot' Joey jumped down armed with a M-16. He ran towards the enemy shooting the one's that made it past his commissar. Joey was known to only shoot to kill. One shot each opponent.
Farren jumped down and whipped around quickly by the sound of an explosion. The custom made blockage exploded. He dug his gun stand into the mud and put his heavy chain gun onto the stand. The smoke cleared and the Condon's began another assault on the trench.
There were now gun batteries firing. The Condon's were thankfully bad aim so the shots went wide of killing anyone but did start causing avalanches of mud. They were trying to flatten the trench.
'Move now or die,' Yank yelled at his men over the gun fire.
Farren got up and began to go when another wave came round the corner. He threw a grenade and caused another avalanche bigger killing the remaining Condon's.
As they ran from the gun barrages Yank thought about their enemy. He had been told at the mission six weeks before that the Condon's were shape shifters. Masters of disguise.
Apparently one had become an officer and led the entire platoon to their deaths in crossfire.
Ox ran past some Condon's and saw they were dressed in the Vindicate uniform. Their regiment. He too out his knife an killed them quickly.
Ox ran to catch up with the squad. They had stopped and were discussing something in hushed whispers.
'You think you can make the shot.' Yank was saying to Joey.
It'll be 'ard. But yeah, I could make it.'
'Go for it.' The commissar replied, a smile spreading on his face.
Joey pulled his prized sniper rifle off his back. He set down the rifle on it's stand and looked through the scope and turned back to what was left of a ten man elite squad.
'The one on the left is closest.' He was telling the commissar.' You should have a minute to get through the gun barrage. I'll stay to cover you. May the Creator watch over you.' He ended.
'And you too.' The commissar replied.
Then Joey inclined his head to each of the other members turning finally to Ox. He grabbed his hand.
'I will never forget you,' he told Ox.
'Aren't you coming with us,' he asked
'No friend. But I will find my way back.'
He let go of Ox's hand and turned back to his scope.
The gunner on the hill died quickly opening up a big enough gap.
'Now,' Joey yelled and the men ran for the opening. As the ran they saw another shape shifter fall from the hill. When it hit the ground it turned back into the slimy thing that was it's true form.
The men made it through the firing barrage just in time for the gap closed instantly as soon as they all had made it through
The gathered their breathe and while doing so heard a yell a curse gunfire and a dull thud.
'Noooo!' Ox bellowed, his only truly best friend had been killed by the monsters. He felt hopeless.

The reaming rangers, the true elite's dragged themselves back to base camp. They passed many dead bodies of friends and foe on the way back. They hardly spoke, thinking of Joey's sacrifice.

'Move or die,' Joey yelled at the Condons. But that didn't stop them. There were three of them but they were bigger than the others. They carried great big scythe that had gone brown with rust. Joey cursed loudly and began running in the opposite direction. As he was running he came across Ox's rocket launcher. He picked it up and continued running. He came across a Condon's rocket launcher. He stopped loaded one rocket and waited. There was a fierce shout and Joey swung around to see more Condon's coming around the opposite corner. They had gotten through the makeshift barrier. 'Damn,' Joey said turning back the other way.
The Condon beasts rounded the corner. Thankfully they were slow. Joey turned to the Condon's behind them. There was ten of them aiming there weapons at him. He had to think fast. A Las-shot whizzed past his head. Las-rifles were guns that ran on power cells and had three sentings. High, semi, and low. These were on low.
Joey tried to aim the big weapon but it was hard. The shot went wide and blew up the trench wall. The wall collapsed smothering all but one Condon. Joey ran up to it grabbed the gun and jammed upward. He knocked it out with the butt of the gun. He shot it once through the head. Then he turned the gun to the highest setting he could. He aimed at one of the beasts which were only a hundred metres away now. One fell heavily against the wall. Dead. The other two just seemed to get madder and begun to run. Joey watched in awe as the giant creatures ran across the trench to kill Joey. He snapped back to his senses in time to draw a ten inch knife.
The first beast swung it's scythe. Joey parried the blow and lashed at the legs of the giant. It let out a low grunt and swung again. Again Joey parried but couldn't strike. This was because the other thing had caught up. It swung it's scythe which Joey had to duck underneath. The beast hit it's mate in the arm and the scythe had got stuck in the forearm. It let out a shout of pain and tried to pull the scythe out of it's arm.
Joey came up behind the one without a weapon and dug the knife in it's neck. He loosened it a bit and pulled sideways, severing the spinal cord. It didn't make a sound just slumped on the floor.
The third one had managed to dislodge the scythe from it's arm and was brandishing the weapon in a offencive manoeuvre.
It swung it like an axe. Joey blocked it but the giant made a downward swing clipping his elbow. He let out a cry of pain. The wound was deep and blood came freely. In seconds the arm of his clothing was drenched with blood. He got shakily to his feet. The beast looked pleased with himself. He swung again but rage had built up inside Joey. First was fighting this stupid war. He didn't want to die in a pointless war. The knife in his good hand he knocked away the scythe and shoved the weapon through the base of the beasts mouth and out of his skull.
Joey withdrew the knife. Green blood spurted out and covered his boots. He cleaned the blade on his uniform. He collapsed against the trench wall breathing hard. The pain in his arm was unbearable. He thought he was going to pass out from pain.
He did some basic first aid and lessened the loss of blood by ripping some of his cloak and tying it just above the cut. He tied the makeshift bandage tight. The pain dropped until it became a stinging throb. He got up and found a pistol and a Las-gun. He walked down the trench the way the others had gone. He couldn't however get through the curtain of cannon fire yet.
The only way to be sure they are dead is a round through the head.
